Brits have been in a heated debate over one simple supermarket act which some have branded "disgusting". Supermarket grazing is when customers open and eat food items around the store before they pay for the product. An act that many shoppers have witnessed, although it is often left undebated over whether it is right or wrong.
Now one person has taken to the social media platform Reddit, to post about supermarket grazing and whether it is acceptable. The topic has caused outrage on Reddit. Why do you do it? "I'm sure this is a phenomenon that has become significantly more prevalent in recent years. "People helping themselves to food off supermarket shelves and eating it as they walk around the shop before attempting to pay with an empty wrapper/package at the till. "What gives? Why do people think this is okay?" The user's question quickly saw the start of the heated debate, as one person said: "This might be an unpopular opinion, but it seems really backwards to me.
"Unless you're literally at risk of passing out or need to eat right that second because of diabetes or similar, I can't see why you can't just wait until you've finished shopping and paid for everything before digging into the snacks." Another person suggested it was down to customers being impatient: "People can't wait these days. "We're very impatient, which is why unless it's hugely engaging, we simply swipe to the next thing.
" Others shared that it's not a problem as long as you pay for the product: "Honestly why does anyone even care? "Don’t like it? Don’t do it yourself. Personally, I’d just wait until I’ve paid but if I saw someone else do it I’d just think hmm they must be hungry." As long as they pay at the end who cares?" A former supermarket employee added to the debate: "I used to work in a supermarket and it was annoying but not worth getting into it with the customer.
"The only time it was a real problem was when people would bring you a grape bag, having eaten half the grapes, or a banana skin, and expecting you to be able to charge them for something that’s sold by weight but was already making it’s way through their digestive system.".
