Bright Futures Beaufort County is casting a line for community support with the launch of its fundraiser, “Catch and Release.” The celebratory event will take place Friday, April 11 from 11:00 a.m.
to 1:00 p.m. at Festival Park, located at 119 E.
Water Street in downtown Washington. The public is invited to attend the festive gathering, which will include lunch, prize drawings and the announcement of the top three fundraisers, affectionately known as the event’s “Big Fish.”In this creative twist on traditional fundraisers, local volunteers — dubbed “fish” — were recruited to raise $1,000 each for Bright Futures.
Supporters can donate via PayPal or by dropping off cash or check donations in envelopes distributed by the volunteers at local businesses, churches and organizations. Donations will be accepted through April 9.“The goal is for each participant to raise $1,000, but truly, any amount helps,” said Robin McKeithan, Assistant Director of the Washington-Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce.
“We’ll announce the total amount raised and recognize the top three fish with some incredible prizes donated by local businesses like Nauti Life, Pirate Water Outfitters, and Sea Rock.”Bright Futures hopes to raise $20,000 through this campaign to support its annual operating expenses, including staff support and infrastructure for coordinating community donations. The nonprofit frequently responds to specific needs of students by organizing and distributing food, clothing, hygiene items, beds and more.
“Most of the cost is absorbed by the Chamber, but we still need about $60,000 annually to operate,” said Ashley Padgett, the Bright Futures Coordinator. “Every dollar helps us respond to student needs in real time and helps more people understand what Bright Futures does behind the scenes.”The fundraiser isn’t just about dollars—it’s about building awareness and community.
Participants are encouraged to stop by the event, meet the volunteers, enjoy a meal and learn more about the impact Bright Futures has on local families.“We want the community to come out and celebrate these fish—they’ve worked hard and volunteered their time because they believe in this mission,” said Padgett. “This event is a fun, festive thank-you and we hope it grows year after year.
”To support the fundraiser, community members can donate online by visiting wbchamber.com/brightfutures. All donations are tax-deductible.
