Bridgwater United Women advanced to the semi-finals of the Somerset Women’s Senior Cup on penalties after their quarter final with Portishead Town Women. The two sides drew 1-1 in the tie played in North Somerset on Sunday (January 19) meaning the tie had to be decided in a shootout. It was 4-4 after the first five penalties each so went to sudden death and Bridgwater emerged victorious 6-5.
Bridgwater United rung the changes from their league match against Swindon Town earlier in the month with Emma Ayres, Hollie Tappin, Jessica Smith, Grace Clark, Kayleigh Spiers and Gracie Proctor all selected for the starting XI. The Robins made a fast start as they took the lead in the opening minutes. A ball over the top by Manfy Sharpe found Smith who drove down the line and fires a shot across the goal into the top corner.
Portishead drew level in the 28th minute when a corner kick was sent into the box and after a scramble the ball was shot into the back of the net. It remained 1-1 until full time and Bridgwater United won on penalties. Its back to league action for Bridgwater on Sunday (January 26) as they travel to Abingdon United.
