Tensions appeared to boil over for LSU Tigers head coach Brian Kelly during Saturday's SEC matchup against the Florida Gators. LSU entered the game at 6-3 and 3-2 in conference play. Despite a pair of losses, the Tigers are still competing for a spot in the SEC Championship Game.
A loss to Billy Napier and the 4-5 Gators, however, would signify the end of those chances for Kelly and company. The Tigers, who were listed as 2.5-point road favorites ( ESPN BET ), found themselves down 7-0 early in the game.
With points needed, LSU's offense was struggling to find some consistency when Kelly shared some seemingly expletive words with junior wide receiver Chris Hilton Jr. I am not a professional lip reader..
.. But.
.. Sure did look like Brian Kelly told Chris Hilton this on the sideline.
.. “Don’t walk away from me! You are f**king uncoachable.
Who the f**k do you think you are?” #LSU #Florida #SEC pic.twitter.com/L9v5sr5OUf It's unclear exactly what was said by Kelly as the ESPN on ABC broadcast did not share audio of the exchange.
Talented lip readers, though, might have an idea. Hilton, a redshirt junior, has appeared in just three games this season after suffering an ankle injury in the preseason. The former four-star has caught two passes in 2024 after racking up 225 receiving yards on 13 catches in 11 games last season.
Nelson Chenault-Imagn Images Kelly's outburst isn't exactly a surprise. The former Notre Dame coach is known for his passionate coaching style, which has served him well with a 192-72 career head coaching record. Coming off a disappointing blowout loss to No.
10 Alabama last week, No. 22 LSU needs to take care of business in Gainesville to stay in the SEC race and, hopefully, make the playoff with an automatic bid. LSU will end the regular season with matchups against Vanderbilt and Oklahoma.
