A cultural historian will deliver a lecture on the "layers of Sussex history." Professor Alexandra Harris is set to present the second annual Long Man Lecture on behalf of The Sussex Archaeological Society. The lecture, titled "Neighbours through Time – Local Lives, Infinite Visions," will explore the diverse perspectives of those who have inhabited the Sussex hills.

The talk will blend the views of poets with those of brewers, merchants, and masons, all considered as "neighbours through time." Professor Harris will delve into how different periods and ways of life have shaped people's views of the same patch of earth. She will explore the far-reaching stories told by these places, magnified by the close attention of different people.

John Baldock, general manager of The Sussex Archaeological Society, said: "I am delighted that Professor Alexandra Harris is joining us to deliver the Long Man Lecture 2025. "The evening promises an enthralling insight into how layers of Sussex history have intertwined, and this annual event significantly advances the society’s aim to promote and share the heritage of Sussex." The lecture will also argue for the potential of local work to enrich our understanding of the arts, suggesting that by focusing on the near-at-hand, we can discover new histories of painting and poetry.

The event will conclude with a Q&A session, allowing attendees to ask Professor Harris questions about her work. She will also sign copies of her latest book, "The Rising Down." The Long Man Lecture 2025: Neighbours through Time – Local Lives, Infinite Visions will take place on Tuesday, April 8, at 7.

30pm at the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts in Brighton. Full event and booking details can be found on the Sussex Past website..
