Rory McIlroy’s 11-year wait for a major championship victory has come to an end, after the Northern Irishman was finally crowned Masters champion at Augusta National on Sunday. In finally getting his hands on the green jacket, McIlroy wrote his name into the history books, becoming only the sixth player to complete the career Grand Slam. The Northern Irishman has been dealt his fair share of pain, but this was all flushed away when winning a nail-biting playoff over Justin Rose.
The five-time major champion was once again forced to do it the hard way, seeing off his European Ryder Cup teammate with an incredible birdie at the extra hole at 18. The emotions of 11 years of major pain poured out of the 35-year-old as he was given a hero's reception when making his way off the 18 green. Heading into the final round, McIlroy found himself two shots clear of Bryson DeChambeau, but a nightmare start saw that lead wiped through just one hole.
A double bogey six for the five-time major champion and a par for DeChambeau ensured the two were level, but this proved to be only the beginning. In the blink of an eye, McIlroy soon found himself behind, as he could only make par whilst DeChambeau made birdie to take a one-shot lead. This was seemingly as good as it got for the LIV Golf star, though, as his Masters Sunday soon tailed off.
Back-to-back birdies for McIlroy and two-straight bogeys for DeChambeau ensured the momentum swung back in the favor of the PGA Tour man, as he moved three shots ahead. Soon enough, McIlroy's concern would turn to Rose in the chasing pack, who was making his move up the leaderboard. Four birdies and two bogeys on the front for the Englishman left him four back, but his quest for the green jacket was far from over.
