Binho Zavaski, head of the Ascema union — which represents federal environmental workers — admitted in an interview to The Brazilian Report that this year’s strike “contributed” to what he called an “epidemic” of fire outbreaks in Brazil. However, he expressed no regrets about the movement, classifying it as essential for the government to step up its efforts in hiring more environmental workers and getting them the appropriate equipment for their job.
