Boys Wrestling Roundup: Cumberland Valley's Montes, Killion land Kickoff Classic titles

Cumberland Valley's Phil Montes and Connor Killion, and West Perry's Ty Morrison, won their bracketets to lead local performances at CV's Kickoff Classic.

West Perry junior Tyler Morrison won the 160-pound final at the District 3 championships, earning the gold medal that had eluded him a year earlier. Cumberland Valley’s Phil Montes and Konnor Killion won titles at 114 and 127 pounds, and West Perry’s Ty Morrison conquered the 189-pound bracket at the PennStro Leasing Kickoff Classic, highlighting local performances in the early season showcase Friday and Saturday at Cumberland Valley High School. Montes, a senior, earned an 8-6 decision over Wilson’s Abramm Schaffer in the 114 final, after earning his 100th career victory – a 13-3 major over Bishop McDevitt’s Aiken Smith – in the semifinals.

Montes also majored Wilson’s Trevor Hertzog 9-0 and defeated Council Rock South’s John Segata 7-0 in the early rounds Friday. Killion joined his teammate at the top of the podium with a 12-5 decision over Burrell’s Cameron Baker. The senior pinned Delaware Valley’s Dean Gouldthorpe in 49 seconds to open the tournament Friday and outscored his final three opponents 42-21.



The Eagles also had top five finishes from Jake Mitchell (third, 145) and Logan Maurer (fourth, 139) to accumulate 112.5 points and finish seventh among the 20 teams competing. Bishop McDevitt ran away with the title, racking up 234.

5 points behind four individual champions. Morrison, a Pitt-Johnstown commit coming off his second consecutive state-medal season in Class 2A, stretched his senior record to 12-0 with an 8-2 decision over Sun Valley’s Brandon Carr in Saturday’s final at Cumberland Valley. He paved his path to the title bout with a pin and a pair of technical falls and a total mat time of three minutes and 40 seconds.

Morrison led a trio of Musangs to the championship finals. Jackson Rush dropped a 7-5 overtime decision to Greyson Music in the 133 final, and Quade Boden fell 8-1 to Delaware Valley’s Christopher Della Bella in the heavyweight final. Tucker Seidel gave West Perry another place-winner, finishing fifth in the 172 bracket.

The Mustangs finished eighth in the team standings. Boiling Springs finished ninth in the team standings behind the strength of four fourth-place finishes from Alex Mentzer (121), Luke Magnani (127), Drew Scherer (133) and Ian Longenberger (145). Sawyer Young added a fifth-place finish.
