Sean Dyche’s side threw away a two-goal lead for the second time in as many matches to lose 3-2 on Saturday (14 September) to extend their winless start to the Premier League season to four games. Although Lineker insists he always expected Villa to come back and get a result against the Toffees, he admits that the defeat will have hurt the Blues supporters who made the journey to Villa Park. Speaking on (16 September, 23:20) he said: “Everton once again, I felt for their fans yesterday.
“They looked distraught in the stadium. Two consecutive games going two up and losing 3-2. I mean it wasn’t quite as traumatic as the Bournemouth game and you always suspected in that game that Villa were on top for most of it.
“You always suspected that they might come back but boy oh boy that must hurt.” It is a hard time to be an Everton supporter and it has been for a while given the off-the-field issues at Goodison Park, but the first few weeks of this season have been incredibly tough for the Toffees. Every time it appears as though the Blues have finally turned a corner and clicked back into gear, Dyche’s side almost immediately implodes and looks like a shell of the team that impressed at times last season.
Whether there are issues with the mentality in the squad or there is just a general lack of belief remains unclear, but it is obvious that this side simply isn’t used to winning and almost appears to have forgotten how to do it. Something has to shift and quickly on the blue half of Merseyside otherwise the Blues will be staring down the barrel of yet another relegation fight. Whether that is the manager, the system or perhaps even the ownership, it is hard to see how the mood around Goodison Park changes in the coming weeks unless there is a sizeable shift within the club.
