Pune: A boy succumbed to injuries on April 16 after his friend (17) crashed an autorickshaw they were travelling in into a railing of a bridge on the Katraj-Kondhwa road on April 15. The Bharati Vidyapeeth police on April 17 booked the minor driver on the charges of causing death of his friend by negligence and reckless driving. The deceased was a resident of Gokulnagar in Katraj.

He sustained severe injuries to his left thigh and died during treatment at Sassoon General Hospital on Wednesday. The police also booked the autorickshaw owner from Katraj on the charges of handing over the three-wheeler to a minor for driving. An officer from the Bharati Vidyapeeth police said in the early hours of April 15, two men approached the police station and informed them about the accident.

"The duo also told us that the driver of the three-wheeler was driving recklessly. The person in the backseat was sitting with his leg out of the vehicle. The driver lost control and crashed into the left side railings of the bridge.

The person in the backseat fell off the autorickshaw. The driver, however, did not stop at the spot," the officer said. The officer said when the police team arrived at the spot, it found the person had sustained severe injuries to his left thigh.

The injured boy provided contact number of his father to the police. "We contacted the victim's father and sent an autorickshaw to bring them to the spot," he said, adding, "The victim was shifted to the Sassoon hospital, where he succumbed to the injuries the next day." The officer said, the police found that on April 14, the victim, his 17-year-old friend and the latter's father went to Katraj Chowk to attend a programme organised on the occasion of Babasaheb Ambedkar's birth anniversary.

After the programme, an autorickshaw driver, who was known to the minor's father, dropped them home. The driver parked his three-wheeler near the minor's house and slept. "Investigations revealed that the minor took permission from the autorickshaw driver and took his vehicle for a drive.

He took the victim, and another friend and they went for a drive," the officer said. He added, "The victim was already carrying a liquor bottle with him. The duo consumed liquor on their way to Swargate.

They had egg-bhurji at Swargate and then dropped the victim's friend at Katraj. The accident happened when they were returning home," he said. "Our investigations are ongoing," the officer said.
