A redditor asked, “Is This Normal For A Workplace?” on the r/antiwork subreddit, with a screenshot of a rather appalling conversation with their manager. The manager rebuked the employee for leaving early from work, stating that “all technicians are only able to clock out before scheduled time when it is pre-approved.” The manager then produced a record of the technician’s punch-out time.

Most of the timestamps show logout time as 4:59 pm, which is one minute early than the scheduled clock out time of 5:00 pm. Here’s how the fellow redditors responded to the post. One user suggested standing in front of the clock and leaving exactly when it strikes 5:00! The user explains in his lengthy reply, stating, “Give them no more or less than the rules require.

” Another user called out the practice as fairly normal at corporations but essentially “messed up.” Meanwhile, several other users shared their horrific ordeal at work with similar stories as the OP. One user who worked at a nursing home shared how their punching machine would clock out every 6 minutes and “if you clock out at 4:49 then it would clock it at 4:54,” which means you will lose 5 minutes, and “And they’ll lecture you!” One user shared how they were reprimanded by their boss for punching out a minute early to catch the train.

The user stated how they would reply to the manager’s text after work hours, but after the reprimand, stopped doing so besides leaving at the scheduled time.
