Surat: Police arrested a bootlegger for allegedly knocking down a head constable with his car when the cop was checking vehicles in Nanpura early on Saturday. The cop suffered injury in his hand. An offence was registered at Athwalines police station.

The accused, Chitrarth alias Chiraj alias Chintu Randeri, suspected that head constable Karabhai Jadavbhai had got his liquor consignment caught twice in the past, said police sources. Around 2.40am when Jadavbhai was on duty with other police personnel near Timarliyawad Crossroads in Nanpura, Randeri came in his car.

Jadavbhai signalled him with his hand and torch to stop. But Randeri allegedly hit Jadavbhai with his car. The cop fell on the bonnet of the car and then fell on the side of the road.

The accused fled the spot. A police van nearby chased the accused and nabbed him at a distance. The accused's car stopped due to some malfunction when police nabbed him.

Later, he was brought to Athwalines police station, where he slapped a cop when police were completing formalities..
