MARKHAM Smart Farmers Association (MSFA) is working to expand rice production in the Markham district, despite challenges like limited water resources and high labour demands. Inspired by the Trukai Smart Farmer Program – a collaboration between Trukai Industries and PNG University of Technology (PN- GUoT) – the association is adopting new techniques to boost yields and control pests and weeds. MSFA President, John Gaif, said MARKHAM Smart Farmers Association (MSFA) rice fields, equipped with an advanced irrigation system.
irrigated farms are producing quality rice here in Markham. But the high cost of irrigation infrastructure limits broader access to these methods. Rice farming in the district is labour-intensive, with only one tractor available for use, slowing production efforts.
“Expanding rice farming here will require more support to address both infrastructure and social challenges,” Mr Gaif said. The association partners with groups like the Fresh Produce Development Agency, Grow PNG, PN- GUoT, and SPISARD to seek additional resources. He emphasised the need for government support to increase local rice production.
The Trukai Smart Farmer Pro- gram, launched in 2022, offers educational certification from PNGUoT, allowing farmers to gain formal skills. PNGUoT Vice Chancellor Professor Ora Renagi said it is the program’s role in sharing knowledge with rural communities to strengthen local agriculture. Trukai Industries supports the program through resources like field training, tool maintenance, and a Village Sustainability Kit.
The company also buys surplus paddy from farmers, securing a market for their harvests. While not offering irrigation subsidies yet, Trukai remains open to expanding support in the future. By training farmers in commercial rice techniques, the Trukai Smart Farmer Program aims to advance food security and self-sufficiency in PNG.
