Bond Humanitarian Working Group welcomes Foreign Secretary’s Sudan announcement at UN Security Council The Bond Humanitarian Working Group welcomes the Foreign Secretary’s announcement at the UN Security Council to strengthen the protection of civilians in Sudan and the doubling of humanitarian assistance to the region. The group said: “We welcome the UK’s commitment to champion the protection of civilians and humanitarian access in Sudan at the UN Security Council yesterday. Doubling UK aid to Sudan is a step toward addressing famine impacting millions.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy’s robust statement signals a needed focus on civilian protection in UK diplomacy and humanitarian action. To be effective, this must be matched with strengthened diplomatic capacity in embassies to prevent international crimes, targeted funding and support for community-led networks rooted in affected communities, such as the Emergency Response Rooms. As the FCDO reviews its approach to diplomacy and development, we hope this approach is at the heart of a renewed UK commitment to crisis-affected countries worldwide.
