Bolton's medical school shaping up to take in students this year

The first new students are expected to arrive at a state-of-the-art medical school in Bolton in a matter of months. The 1,100 student capacity Institute of Medicine, built on the grounds of Royal Bolton Hospital in Farnworth, has been one of the most highly anticipated projects the borough has seen in recent years. The scheme, started at first by the University of Bolton , now Greater Manchester has been underway since 2018 and will feature facilities designed by Universal AV.

University IT operations manager Ian Moth said: “Universal AV’s deep understanding of the university’s infrastructure and teaching methods was invaluable. “They helped redesign and integrate technology based on the needs of our academics, ensuring seamless compatibility across campus. All kinds of equipment have been installed (Image: Wolfenden) “Their experience with our existing systems allowed us to standardize equipment, making the technology user-friendly for staff across departments.



” After launching in 2018 the project was paused with the onset of the Covid pandemic in 2020. But a levelling up grant from the government aimed at helping to address NHS staff shortages was awarded not long after. This is aimed at providing continuity for students transitioning from academic to professional environments.

Mr Moth said: “Universal AV’s attention to detail, including the aesthetics and cable management, was exceptional.

“Their work on the LED wall, which replaced the original projection plan due to rising costs, delivered a superior experience for students.” In September 2025, the university will welcome its first cohort of medical students, with the first graduates expected in 2028..
