After repeated reports of vehicles, including quad bikes, tearing across the grass at Benfleet’s Woodside Park, bollards have now been installed around its perimeter. Essex Police have described the measures as “target hardening” and invited residents of other areas to get in touch if they require similar defences. “It’s a great park for families and I am pleased that something is being done,” he said.

“The Police Fire and Crime Commissioner have given the council a lot of money for improved CCTV around the borough and I am pleased that the park’s CCTV is also due an upgrade. “Hopefully the new bollards and the extra CCTV when it’s in place will deter vehicles from getting on the field and allow families and the sporting teams who use the park to enjoy it in peace.” In recent months, Castle Point Council has been considering where up to 100 extra cameras could be rolled out to cut crime and boost community safety - with Woodside Park last month being suggested as an option by Conservative MP for Castle Point, Dame Rebecca Harris.

The bollards, although small and unobtrusive, are expected to prevent vehicles such as quad bikes from accessing the area and tearing up grass used by dozens of community groups and thousands of residents. A spokesperson for Essex Police said: “At Woodside park, Benfleet, posts have been installed around the perimeter to deter quad bike riders and prevent criminal damage to the facilities. “Based on reports, Castle Point Council acted quickly to install these - it may not prevent all of the antisocial behaviour, but it is a good start.

” They added: “If you're experiencing antisocial behaviour in your community, we want you to report it to us so that we can work with our community partners to resolve community issues. “Our partners can assist with target hardening, such as a installing posts to prevent quads entering fields as well as specialist gates.” Castle Point Council has been contacted for a comment.
