In fact, in the years that followed up until today, the winery has refined its approach, blending cutting-edge technology with time-honoured techniques, while honouring the founders’ philosophy of crafting wines that tell a story of place, climate, and passion.

Sitting at elevations between 900 and 1,100 metres (2,950-3,600 feet) above sea level, these vineyards enjoy intense sunlight, significant diurnal temperature variation, and naturally low humidity, elements that contribute to slow grape ripening and concentrated flavours. The soils here are alluvial, with a mix of sand, clay, and gravel, providing excellent drainage while stressing the vines just enough to produce fruit of remarkable intensity. Additionally, Mendoza’s famed Andean snowmelt irrigation system ensures a steady and controlled water supply, crucial for maintaining vine health in this semi-arid region.

To truly understand the soul of Ruca Malen, one must experience its wines and today, Thursday Food explores a few labels from among its diverse portfolio, highlighting five standout expressions that exemplify the estate’s viticultural mastery: Ruca Malen Capítulo Uno Chardonnay is made from 100 per cent Chardonnay grapes from their Los Chacayes Vineyards, located 1,100 metres above sea level, in the Uco Valley. Attractive and delicate, this Chardonnay stands out for its freshness, with aromas of white fruit and soft citrus notes accompanied by jasmine and orange blossom, on the nose.

On the palate, it is fruity and juicy, with a smooth texture that invites us to continue drinking. Ruca Malen Capítulo Dos Petit Verdot, from their Agrelo vineyards in Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza, is a 100 per cent varietal that was aged 10 to 12 months in French oak barrels of different uses (15 per cent new). This Petit Verdot is characterised by being expressive and elegant, with an attractive and deep violet colour.

On the nose it presents spicy and herbal notes, along with aromas of black fruits such as blueberries and plums. Its aging in the barrel provides complexity along with soft aromas of chocolate. It is opulent in the mouth, with soft tannins and a long finish.

Ruca Malen Capítulo Dos Garnacha comprises 100 per cent Garnacha grapes from their vineyards in the Ugarteche area of Lujan de Cuyo. Pale ruby red in colour, it’s fresh on the nose, with intense aromas of wild red fruits combined with soft notes of herbs and spices. On the palate, it’s subtle, sweet at first, juicy, and has good acidity, with notes of red fruits such as cherry and blackberry, and a smooth mineral texture on the finish.

Ruca Malen Capítulo Dos Corte de Blancas is a harmonious blend of grapes, 70 per cent Sauvignon Blanc from their vineyards in Gualtallary and 30 per cent Semillón from their El Peral vineyards, both located in the Tupungato area of Mendoza’s Uco Valley. Greenish yellow with steely highlights in colour, it expresses fresh aromas on the nose, with notes of citrus and herbs; upon opening, white flowers and minerality (typical of Gualtallary) emerge. In the mouth, it is complex, with vibrant, well-balanced acidity and a beautiful finish.

Ruca Malen Capítulo Tres Malbec Centenario is a 100 per cent varietal vintage made from grapes grown in Las Compuertas, El Cepillo and Villa Bastias, Mendoza. It exhibits aromas of red fruits and flowers such as violet and lavender combined with black pepper, soft notes of tobacco as well as chocolate, reflecting the elegance and balance of grapes from historic vineyards in different terroirs of Mendoza. The palate is succulent, having good balance and concentration, great complexity, along with velvety tannins.

Ruca Malen’s wines have consistently garnered international acclaim, securing high scores from the world’s most esteemed critics earning noteworthy accolades. Tim Atkin MW frequently rates Ruca Malen’s Malbec and Petit Verdot above 92 points, recognising their exceptional structure and expression. James Suckling has highlighted the elegance and purity of the Chardonnay and Malbec, awarding them 90+ points in multiple vintages.

Vinous has praised the winery’s commitment to terroir-driven winemaking, often ranking their Corte de Blancas and Garnacha among Argentina’s top white and alternative reds.
