Texas State dropped their third straight game, losing to the Arkansas State Red Wolves 66-50, The Bobcats and Head Coach Zenarae Antoine drop their overall record to 7-7 and their conference record to 1-3. “It's extremely disappointing,” Antoine said. ”Arkansas State follwoed their game plan and did what they did really well, which is shoot the three.
That's one of the things that we talked about limiting. We had to do a great job of limiting their opportunity and transition to shoot the three, and then we had to take care of the basketball coming off a game where we did not do a good job of that. “But things that we generally do well at, we did not do really well today.
We did not get to the free throw line as much as we normally do. ..
. Their bench clearly outplayed us. So areas that we generally can hang our hat on that this is what we do, well, we did not do well today.
” The Bobcats got off to a slow start in the first quarter. The Red Wolves jumped out to a 7-2 lead while their defense kept the Texas State offense in flux. Excellcent free throw shooting from senior power forward Jaylin Foster kept the Bobcats from getting into an even bigger deficit with Texas State just shooting 3-11 from the field in the first quarter.
Going into the second quarter, the Bobcats trailed 18-10. After an opening quarter jumper from Arkansas State, Texas State overcame their offensive woes in the first quarter by going on a 9–2 run in the second to cut the deficit down 22-19. The Red Wolves pushed their lead out to eight before the Bobcats closed out the second quarter on a 8-3 run to make it a 30-27 game going into halftime.
Arkansas State opened up the third quarter with a 5-0 run only for Texas State to respond with an 8-0 run and tie the game up at 35-35. With the momentum swinging towards Texas State, Arkansas State snapped it right back. The Red Wolves closed out the third quarter on a 11-2 run and extended their lead to 46-37 heading into the third quarter.
After the Bobcats scored on the opening layup from senior guard Destiny Terrell, Arkansas State went on a 18-2 run and pushed their lead to 64-41. Texas State was unable to overcome the run and fell to Arkansas State 66-50. Foster led the team in scoring and rebounds with 11 points and 14 boards to complete the double-double.
“Jalen definitely has had a slump over the last couple games,” Antoine said. We sat down, talked and it was a really good productive talk. I know she's got a lot to give and there's adjustments that we made too as a coaching staff to help get her there.
“So that's what she saw today when her shots weren't falling, she found other ways to get herself involved. She was really communicative and she hit the glass hard.” Texas State will look to snap their three-game losing streak this Saturday when the Bobcats host the South Alabama Jaguars.
Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at Strahan Arena.
