Blue Hawks women win Jackrabbit Stampede Rodeo in South Dakota

The 2024-25 season is winding to a close on NIRA rodeo circuit.

BROOKINGS, SD — The Dickinson State University rodeo team had its ups-and-downs over the course of the split, 2024-25 season, but the women’s team currently is sitting in a solid spot overall in the Great Plains Region on the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association standings at second-overall with 1,720 points, behind Black Hills State University’s (SD) 2,314.83-point total. The Blue Hawks are solidly in front of Mid-Plains Community College (North Platte, Neb.

) and have two remaining events to make up the ground, at BHSU in Spearfish, SD from April 25-26 and at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln event the following weekend to close out the schedule. The men’s team finds themselves situated firmly in fifth-place at 2,019 points — almost 1,000 points behind fourth-place Iowa Central Community College’s 3,002.5 and well-ahead of BHSU at 766 — with Mid-Plains well in front at the top on 6,162 points for the year.



ADVERTISEMENT But in last-weekend’s Jackrabbit Stampede in Brookings, the Blue Hawks women came away with the overall victory over the two-day event, finishing with 395 points and besting the University of Nebraska-Lincoln team’s 320 and third-place MPCC’s 310. The men’s team turned in a sixth-place total of 255, but saw some solid individual performances along the way. Among the women who earned solid performances at the Jackrabbit Stampede were DSU’s Jenna Grace Hume and her second-place time/score of 5.

8 in breakaway-roping and Maci Marisa Maher’s 13.7 to finish at second in that event with Jaysee Jean Jones turning in a 6.3 that was good enough for fifth.

Tycie Jo Phalen had a 27.95 and fourth in barrel-racing to close out the individual efforts on the weekend. Meanwhile, Lanny Levi Brooks took second in saddle-bronc riding for the men at 136 points and Tayson Patrick Jones was just behind him with a time/score of 133.
