BJP Sweeps 9 Of 10 Haryana Civic Bodies, Congress Draws Blank. Setback For Hooda On Home Turf

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday swept the civic polls on Haryana registering emphatic win in nine of the ten municipal corporations in the recently held elections. The Congress was again left biting dust after it looked to turn around its electoral fate following its deafeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and ensuing assembly polls. The polls, on March 2, were held to elect mayors and ward members in seven municipal corporations including Gurugram, Manesar, Faridabad, Hisar, Rohtak, Karnal, and Yamunanagar. Bypolls for the mayoral posts in Ambala and Sonipat were also held the same day along with the elections for presidents and ward members in 21 municipal committees. Independent candidate Inderjeet Yadav won the civic polls in Manesar where the municipal elections were held for the first time. BJP's Faridabad nominee Parveen Joshi and Raj Rani from Gurugram registered victories with big margins. Joshi won the seat by over 3 lakh votes while Rani won by more than 1.79 lakh votes. Senior BJP leaders Rajiv Jain and Renu Bala Gupta from Sonipat and Karnal respectively too were among the notable winners. BJP candidates Praveen Popli won the mayoral post from Hisar, Komal Saini from Panipat, and Suman from Yamunanagar. BJP's Shailja Sachdeva was elected as Mayor from Ambala. BJP's Ram Avtar emerged the undisputed winner defeating Congress' Surajmal Kiloi by more than 45,000 ballots. In the outgoing municipal corporations, the saffron party had mayors in eight of the 10 civic bodies across the state. The civic polls came as a huge setback for the Congress drawing a blank. The party witnesses workers and leaders switching sides with the BJP ahead of the elections. The party's state unit also faced infighting and factionalism unlik its rival BJP which has well-organised and strong organisation structure down till the grassroots level.
