Delhi BJP MLA Tarvinder Singh Marwah has written a letter to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta , requesting an official directive for shopkeepers to display their names prominently in front of their establishments during the upcoming festivals of Navratri and Eid. In his letter, Marwah emphasized the importance of mutual respect and harmony during the festive season. He stated, “As we approach Navratri and Eid, it is crucial to ensure that celebrations take place with respect and unity.
I urge your esteemed office to issue guidance for shopkeepers across Delhi to display nameplates at their establishments. This will enable citizens to make informed choices while purchasing sacred items, preserving the sanctity of their rituals and beliefs.” Highlighting the benefits of such a measure, Marwah underscored that it would promote transparency and foster communal harmony.
He further asserted that the Chief Minister’s intervention could help prevent misunderstandings and contribute to a smooth festive atmosphere in the capital. The request has sparked discussions regarding its implications, with various stakeholders weighing in on the need for such a directive during religious festivities. A similar order was issued by Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand - states governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2024,,- ahead of the Kanwar Yatra.
Opposition parties and even BJP allies criticised it, saying it targeted Muslim-owned establishments and could affect livelihoods. State authorities claimed the order was meant to maintain law and order. After this, the Supreme Court said to put this directive on hold.
