I’ve recently been reflecting on just how much our smart phones have changed our lives. Recently my daughter and I were in New York City on vacation, (Talk about culture shock!) and she was able to confirm our return flights while we were in the subterranean level of the 9/11 Museum. Amazing.

No longer are we tied to a place that has a phone with a cord. Information via the internet — even underground — is available absolutely anywhere. My parents could not have foreseen such a world.

Like millions, I own an Apple iPhone. This month and next month I am devoting my columns to Apple’s latest update, known as iOS 18. We, the teachers and coaches at the Center for Lifelong Learning, work hard so we can offer classes that include the latest updates to our Apple devices.

But we don’t just offer Apple courses. Drop by the B & E Building, Room 104, on the campus of USC Aiken during business hours and check out all the different courses we are offering this fall. The fall session has already started, and, although some of the courses have been completed, others are still available.

In addition to our technology courses, we offer general interest courses on a wide range of subjects. Also, if you happen to have missed a technical course this fall, it will likely be offered again in our spring session which will start in mid-January. “iOS” stands for iPhone Operating System.

As the standard mobile operating system for Apple iPhones, it powers the iPhone's memory and its ability to process data. To say that iOS is important in an iPhone is an understatement. Take away the iOS and you are left with an attractive piece of metal with glass on one side.

The original and current iPhone operating systems are based on the Mac Operating System software (MacOS), which has been used to run Macintosh computers and laptops for many years. iOS is also the template for other Apple product systems, such as watchOS, tvOS, and iPadOS, which power the Apple Watch, Apple TV, and iPad respectively. (Android phones do not use iOS.

They use the Android operating system, which is Linux-based.) The original iOS for Apple phones was unveiled with the release of the first-generation iPhone in 2007. At the time of release, iOS was considered a major advancement in touchscreen technology because it allowed users to operate their devices by tapping the screens with their fingers or using a stylus.

The 2008 iOS update debuted the App Store which enabled iPhone users to purchase third-party apps. In 2010, the iOS 4 update included the video-calling app FaceTime. Voice assistant Siri was introduced with the iOS 6 update in 2012.

Then Apple debuted a complete redesign with iOS 7. Apple Pay was part of the iOS 8 launch in 2014. Most iOS updates improve various aspects of the Apple operating systems, upgrade some Apple apps, or improve security.

For these reasons it is important that you update your device when it becomes available. However, when Apple releases a major upgrade (for example, this new iOS 18) you might consider waiting a few weeks before downloading and installing it. That’s because not all iOS updates are initially successful.

Some have included bugs prompting Apple to release quick updates to fix them. (For instance, iOS 11 featured a keyboard glitch where certain letters didn't work or some incorrectly autocorrected.) When you’re ready, here’s how to update to the latest version of iOS: Go to Settings, General, and then Software Update.

That way your phone will always run the current iOS version. To do that, go to Settings, General, Software Update, and Turn on Automatic Updates. With automatic updates, any new update will be downloaded and installed overnight when the phone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi.

Updates are free. Back to iOS 18, available this fall, one of the biggest iOS upgrades in years. It will deliver a more personalized and customizable experience, including some of the features Android users already take for granted.

From much-awaited features like RCS support in Messages (easier sharing and more features) to a redesign of the Photos app, there's a lot of new stuff for users and developers alike to dig into. Your iPhone will also soon be more customizable with a home screen layout that fits your needs. It will also include better Control Center navigation, along with updates to key apps like Messages, Mail, and other apps.

Here's one important feature of iOS 18. I’ll tell you about other features next month. Apple Intelligence is the company's initiative to introduce AI (Artificial Intelligence) to your iPhone.

It is expected to roll out this fall; however, it will only work on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and later models. Besides the usual writing tools to help summarize content and create images or "Genmojis," Apple Intelligence aims to provide a more personalized experience. It uses Image Playground to help you create images based on descriptions, suggested concepts or people from your Photos library.

You will be able to customize images with new styles and make changes to add context to a story. The feature is integrated into your iPhone. Apple tells us that “it’s aware of your personal information without collecting your personal information.

” The company has partnered with ChatGPT to bring the service to your iPhone. You won’t need a separate account to access ChatGPT. Next month, I will tell you about additional features in the iOS 18 update.
