Women in Kadamhiya, near Valmiki Tiger Reserve, led by Suman Devi, produce 1200 kg of mushrooms and earn Rs 200,000 in 3-4 months, with plans to expand In the district surrounding the Valmiki Tiger Reserve, women from the Kadamhiya region in Bihar are earning widespread acclaim for their innovative agricultural venture. Around 30 women in this village, adjacent to the Valmikinagar range, have successfully turned to large-scale mushroom production. Their efforts have not only brought substantial income but also enabled them to double their profits by processing and selling mushrooms in various forms.
In a bid to support their families, particularly those struggling financially, women have formed groups to engage in mushroom cultivation. Led by local resident Suman Devi, the women set up a bamboo and straw hut on unused land as the foundation of their enterprise. Utilising government horticulture schemes, they purchased hundreds of bags of oyster mushrooms at low costs and began cultivation within the hut.
Suman Devi, who has received extensive training in mushroom production, explains that the mushrooms are grown under controlled conditions and sold locally for Rs 150 to Rs 200 per kilogram. Their initial success encouraged the women to continue production independently, leading to substantial financial gains. Shobha Devi, another member of the group, highlights the transformative impact of this venture on her life, given that she is a widow with limited family income.
The statistics speak volumes; each bag yields approximately 7 kg of mushrooms. With around 150 bags in use, the women produce about 1200 kg of mushrooms, bringing in over Rs 200,000 in just three to four months. Moreover, the women have diversified their products by creating mushroom powder, which sells for Rs 400 per kilogram.
The powder’s high demand among local hotels and restaurants has significantly boosted their income. This enterprise, with an annual investment of Rs 50,000, opens up potential earnings of up to Rs 700,000 per year. Motivated by their success, the women plan to expand and modernise their business, setting a powerful example of rural entrepreneurship.
