Big Little Lies author’s latest book explores age-old questions of fate and free will

On a flight from Hobart to Sydney, an older woman stands up and begins to make her way through the cabin, telling each passenger how and when they’re going to die. From cardiac arrest at 91 to drowning at seven years old, the predictions — or are they fortunes? — vary greatly, as do the reactions of the passengers, already irritated from a lengthy delay. When challenged, all the mysterious woman will say is “fate won’t be fought”. Is it some kind of prank? Is the woman having a mental breakdown? Or is she a genuine psychic?

When challenged, all the mysterious woman will say is “fate won’t be fought”. Is it some kind of prank? Is the woman having a mental breakdown? Or is she a genuine psychic? This is the premise of the 10th novel from Liane Moriarty, the Australian author best known for writing Big Little Lies . She is reported to be developing a story for the third season of the star-studded drama series, as well as a second season of Nine Perfect Strangers , another adaptation of her novels led by Nicole Kidman, while this year also saw the release of Apples Never Fall , a series based on yet another Moriarty book, starring Annette Bening and Sam Neill.
