com senior meteorologist Tom Kines in an online report. "Most of New England has been living a charmed life weather-wise with cloudy days few and far between over the past few weeks," Kines said. “So while clouds and showers may bring a setback for part of Saturday, the rest of the weekend looks to be delightful.

” For the week ahead, after some early Monday showers, it should be downright chilly beginning on Tuesday. Temperatures are expected to be a few degrees below the average range from the low 40s to the low 60s, per historical records by the National Weather Service at Pittsfield Municipal Airport. “The change to chilly weather next week is probably going to be accompanied by gusty winds which will likely knock a lot of the leaves off the trees in central and northern New England," Kines said.

The state Department of Conservation and Recreation’s new fall foliage map indicates mid-point to near-peak conditions for the week ahead, with maximum leaf change viewing likely on Indigenous Peoples/Columbus Day weekend, as usual. The extended outlook for Oct. 12-18 from the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center signals a switch to cooler than average temperatures for mid-October, with slightly below normal rainfall.

Peering far ahead into the crystal ball, late fall and winter weather should be influenced by La Niña patterns, which usually bring cooler winters to the northern U.S. La Niña refers to the large-scale cooling of the ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean, coupled with changes in the tropical atmospheric circulation, such as winds, pressure and rainfall.

The effects of each La Niña event vary depending on its intensity, duration, time of year it develops and the interaction with other climate drivers, according to the World Meteorological Association. According to the Climate Prediction Center, the months ahead through December and beyond are expected to see above-normal temperatures and precipitation. "The prediction doesn’t break down whether it will be rain or snow," said Nick Bassill, director of the State Weather Risk Communication Center at the University at Albany, N.

Y. “We’ll probably have a wet winter with a mix of rainstorms and snow if temperatures trend warmer,” he said. Information from the Times Union (Albany) was included in this article.
