(Photo by Jeff Antenore, Contributing Photographer) “We have a lot of size and Izzy and I take pride in our rebounding,” Tremper said. “One of the legends that I look up to, Pat Summitt, says, ‘offense sells tickets, defense wins games, rebounding wins championships,’ ” San Clemente coach Kerri Husbands said. “We work on rebounding every single day so I’m happy to hear those numbers.

” Both teams entered Friday ranked in the Register’s Top 25 with San Clemente (8-4) being No. 5 and Canyon (8-4) at No. 20.

Despite the lopsided score, Canyon was physical on defense and forced 15 turnovers by San Clemente. “We try to schedule with an eye looking towards league and then down the road to CIF,” Husbands said. “We wanted a scrappy, physical game and we got that tonight.

We wanted that physical game to get tested and make sure we kept our composure and played through that.” San Clemente was able to neutralize Canyon’s physicality and find quality shots inside. Capistrano Valley Christian transfer Andrea Rico led the Tritons with 17 points and Tremper had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Rico is one of two talented transfers added to San Clemente’s roster this season. Quinsey Bryan transferred from Crean Lutheran and will be eligible to play in San Clemente’s next game after observing the sit-out period. “They are wonderful young women in addition to being great basketball players so they fit right in,” Husbands said of Rico and Bryan.

“We have a great group. The girls really like each other.” Ellie Anderson had 11 points for the Tritons and Sims added nine.

In addition to Rico’s 17 points, she grabbed seven rebounds and had six assists. Canyon made some 3-pointers early in the game to keep the game close, but was unable to cut San Clemente’s lead into single digits after the beginning of the second quarter. Sophomore Legacy Benjamin led Canyon with eight points and Divya Sukhija made two 3-pointers.

Everett Roach led Canyon’s defense with three steals. Canyon coach Sara Brown played her high school career at San Clemente and led the Tritons to three consecutive CIF-SS championships from 2002-2004. Brown received a nice ovation from the San Clemente crowd prior to the game.

“She’s a tremendous coach,” Husbands said. “She represents the Triton alumni well out there.” Canyon won the CIF-SS Division 4AA championship last season.

The Comanches won three games in the San Dimas Tournament last week but lost to Rosary in the last game of the tournament. Canyon will play in the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic next week and open the tournament against Mission Hills on Thursday. San Clemente will also play in the SoCal Holiday Classic next week and play Fountain Valley on Thursday.
