ISLAMABAD - Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) yesterday said that country’s first elected Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto gifted the nation with the constitution. PPP Parliamentarians Secretary General Syed Nayyar Bukhari said the party was celebrating the Constitution Day which marks a landmark and unforgettable chapter in Pakistan’s political and democratic history. “On this day in 1973, Pakistan transitioned from a state without a constitution to one governed by a democratic framework with the unanimous passage of the Constitution of 1973.
This historic achievement is credited to the country’s first elected Prime Minister, Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who gifted the nation with the Constitution,” he said in a message. Bukhari, emphasized that April 10 is a defining day in the nation’s democratic journey. “This was the day when public representatives put their seal on parliamentary democracy, giving the country a constitutional identity,” he said.
Trump administration accelerates student visa cancellations He highlighted the transformative impact of the 1973 Constitution, which granted provinces autonomy, rights over coastal regions and natural resources, and enshrined equal constitutional, human, and economic rights for all citizens. “It was a day when workers, labourers, and students were empowered with the right to form unions,” he added. Bukhari affirmed that under the Constitution passed by Bhutto’s parliament, democracy and the Constitution are inseparable.
The PPP, as the guardian of the Constitution, has made immense sacrifices in its struggle for the restoration of democracy, he stated. He also credited President Asif Ali Zardari for his historic decision to transfer presidential powers to the parliament, thereby empowering democratic institutions and closing the door on unconstitutional interventions forever. “(PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is the strong and effective voice for constitutional supremacy and robust democracy in parliament,” Bukhari said.
