Beyond Paradise returned to screens on Friday as fans feared that all was not well with Martha's mum, Anne (Barbara Flynn). She had been helping out at her daughter's new restaurant, when she took a nasty fall - with fans thinking it is a sign of something more sinister. The BBC character's legs buckled beneath her without warning, resulting in her dropping a plate and injuring her shoulder in the process.
She blamed the mishap on simply skipping breakfast, but those watching at home thought that there could be more to it. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), one fan suggested: "I think Martha's mum is going to have some sort of long term illness. That fall was sowing the seed for something bigger #BeyondParadise.
" Another echoed: "What's wrong with Martha's Mum? #BeyondParadise," while a third wrote: "Her mum better not be sick I’ll riot #BeyondParadise." Actress Barbara previously teased that there was a "bombshell" coming for Anne. She said: "At the end of the previous series, Anne was in a very tender and vulnerable place.
She had experienced a terrible betrayal and a profound loss of trust. "In this new series, she’s busy trying to move on with her life in a very focused and solitary way, throwing herself into tasks to keep going. Then, out of nowhere, a bombshell hits.
It’s a shock." She added: "It's a very good and interesting line. And the scare, I think, will help a lot of people who might be going through something similar, or to be more aware.
The series has this ability to really reach out and connect with people in their sitting rooms." Sally Bretton , who plays Martha , told Digital Spy: "It brings up all the history because when we joined the series, Martha's father had died fairly recently in the year preceding, and I think it reignites that grief a little bit, especially for Anne." She added: "[Anne plays] it down because her [daughter's business has] just moved premises and she's starting out on another branch of trying to create a family and so Anne would play it down.
There is a distancing that might occur. "It's a different stage of her relationship with her only beloved child who she's been very, very close to. This season it's sometimes uncomfortable, but interesting, to watch the slight distancing that happens because of the situation.
