I am writing to draw attention to a troubling issue that is often ignored — the suffering of stray animals on our streets. Each day, countless dogs, cats, and other animals are seen starving, injured, or merely surviving in appalling conditions. Although some animal shelters exist, they are typically overwhelmed, underfunded, or fail to reach the areas where help is most needed.
This neglect not only leads to immense suffering for these innocent creatures but also creates public safety concerns. Hungry or frightened stray dogs may become aggressive, posing risks to people. Moreover, the harsh street conditions and pollution often result in severe injuries or painful deaths.
When accidents occur, it is heartbreaking to see the drivers responsible simply drive away, leaving the poor animals to suffer alone. It is imperative that animal shelters and local authorities take more responsibility. Regular rescue operations, access to medical care, and feeding programmes must be introduced.
Public awareness campaigns can also foster compassion and a sense of responsibility toward these animals. CAT upholds Rs50m penalty on PVMA for anti-competitive practices As a society, we must recognise our duty to care for all living beings. These animals deserve dignity and protection — and it is high time we took meaningful action to ensure their safety and well-being.
