One of the last of the year's major meteor showers is expected to light up the night sky this weekend. The multi-coloured Geminid meteor shower is expected to peak over the next 48 hours - some time between December 14 and 15. Called a "meteor storm" because of its intensity, the shower which returns every December is known as one of the most spectacular of the year.

According to Space.com, peak Geminid activity typically occurs in the late evening and into the early morning hours, with the best viewing time around 2 a.m.
