Sixth-seeded Scotlandville took an early lead before holding No. 3 Woodlawn at arm's length the rest of the way as it registered a 42-34 win. The win moves the Hornets (9-3) into Saturday's semifinals where they will face No.
2 McKinley at 6 p.m. The Panthers advanced with a 66-45 win over No.
7 Tara. Saturday's second semifinal matches No. 4 Southern Lab and top-seeded Liberty at 7:30 p.
m. Southern Lab beat Capitol 62-49 in its quarterfinal, while Liberty ousted Broadmoor 70-23. Woodlawn (9-5) trailed 17-11 at halftime but battled back in the third quarter.
Triston Brown made a 3-pointer and added a fast break layup helping the Panthers pull within 21-18. After a Scotlandville turnover, Ahmad Price sank two free throws, but the Hornets responded immediately. Scotlandville quickly broke through Woodlawn's press for a layup and took a 26-22 lead into the fourth quarter.
Woodlawn missed its first six shots in the final quarter and never got closer than five points in the final minutes. "Woodlawn is an outstanding team. Today, I think we played better defensively, but we're still looking for ways to score the basketball," Scotlandville coach Jeremy Noah said.
"We've got to be tough and put the ball in the hole." Woodlawn's Kelinee Stone was the game's leading scorer with 15 points. Scotlandville got 13 points from Aaron Marshall and 9 points from Kenneth Jones.
The Panthers had chances to take the lead in the low-scoring first half. Trailing 12-11, Woodlawn had two possessions with a chance to take the lead. The second was derailed when the Panthers got a technical foul for an illegal substitution.
The foul helped Scotlandville score the last six points of the half. "We came out flat and Scotlandville controlled the boards better than we did," Woodlawn coach Stefson Arnold said. "That was the difference in the basketball game.
" MCKINLEY 66, TARA 45: Tara played McKinley (7-5) close for the opening five minutes. The Panthers led 10-9 after Tara's Jayden Dixon converted a three-point play before the Panthers finished the quarter with a 9-0 run. Jamond Jacobs, who led McKinley with 19 points, had three baskets during the run.
Also hitting double figures for the Panthers were John Emery with 12 and Kaleb Brown with 11. Panthers' post player Craig Lovelady worked inside for five points, and drew plenty of attention from the Trojans. Two of Tara's big men, Brandon Walker and Devhar Willis, each had three fouls by halftime.
McKinley led 39-21 at halftime and didn't let Tara get closer than 12 points in the second half. "We wanted to make sure we were able to defend them," McKinley coach Devan Clark said. "Tara's guards can dictate tempo, so we were real conscious of not letting them get going fast.
