Hove has once again been named one of the best places to live in the UK by The Sunday Times. Describing the area as "foodie and funky", The Times says Hove offers "the best of Brighton without the bad bits". Questionably, the article refers to Brighton as Hove's "big brother", which it's got to lose some marks for, and the author doesn’t seem to know where the “hard to discern” boundary between the two is.
Still, it’s hard to argue with their assessment that Hove has many of the benefits of Brighton, but with a bit less of the craziness; “much more Zen”, as The Times puts it. The entry also spotlights a number of local shops and restaurants that contribute to Hove’s esteemed vibe. George Street “has you covered for high-street essentials and charity stores,” while Blatchington Road and Portland Road get a shout out for their “cafés and boutiques”.
Plant-based refill shop Harriet’s of Hove is listed as a “retail highlight”, as are clothes and homeware shop Velvet, children’s bookshop Book Nook, and The Flower Stand florist. George Street gets a mention (Image: Google) The article recommends hunting for vintage goodies at Department Flea Market, picking up French antique furniture at Three Angels, and shopping for trainers at jogging shop Run. One of the recurring themes in The Times’ article is the strength of the food scene in Hove.

The “tiny” Palmito gets a shoutout for its “acclaimed food with Latin America and South Asian flavours”. The Ginger Pig gets a namecheck (Image: Google) “Cosy neighbourhood gastropub” The Ginger Pig is included, as is the “excellent Italian” Cin Cin, while Market is labelled “a great tapas and wine bar.
” The Stirling Arms “serves up a decent pint and great atmosphere,” and there are “queues by the beach in summer for an ice cream” from family-favourite Marrocco’s. Nearby Rockwater “has you covered from coffee to cocktails and every meal in between”. The Times adds that “some of the most talked-about eateries” are on Church Road.
In this category it includes: Wild Flor, with its “world-class wine list”; Etch, from the MasterChef winner Steven Edwards; Fourth and Church, the restaurant, bar and wine shop; and the Plotting Parlour, which serves “delicious, inventive cocktails”..
