De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde continued its winning ways but not without a challenge from Jose Rizal University, 25-20, 25-19, 25-20, on Saturday in the NCAA Season 100 women's volleyball tournament at the San Beda University Gym in Manila. The two teams were tied at 20 in the third set before Chenie Basarte, Jessa Dorog, and errors from the Lady Bombers handed the win to the Lady Blazers who extended their winning streak to 42 since Season 95. Clydel Mae Catarig led the Taft-based squad with 14 points, all from attacks, while Wielyn Estoque had 10 points as Benilde improved to 2-0.

Basarte had 14 out of Benilde's 17 excellent sets. Nicole Deala led the Lady Bombers with nine points as JRU remained winless in three matches. "Pinaghandaan namin 'yung game namin and sa performance ko kanina, [dahil] sa lahat naman 'yun sa team.

Mas mabuti if mag-contribute tayo lahat-lahat so happy naman ako sa kung anong naibigay ko sa team namin," said the sophomore Catarig. The win also came after Jerry Yee, who steered the Lady Blazers to three straight titles, was involved in an inquiry regarding his status in the league. A coach for ZUS Coffee in the Premier Volleyball League, Yee was also listed as head coach of the Lady Blazers during their first game last February 20.

The NCAA volleyball committee, however, found that Yee did not violate the league rule prohibiting coaches concurrently handling pro teams and school teams. On Saturday, Rogelio "Onyok" Getigan, Jr. was listed as head coach of the Lady Blazers, while Yee was listed as assistant coach.

Benilde will face San Sebastian College-Recoletos on Thursday. —JKC, GMA Integrated News.
