Published: September 7, 2024 4:44 PM IST By : Amidst the backdrop of a firestorm of outrage and protests sparked by last month’s brutal RG Kar hospital rape and murder case in Kolkata, a 15-year-old schoolgirl was allegedly “sexually assaulted” while returning home from tuition in Hooghly district in West Bengal on Friday night. According to a report by India Today, the teenager was found unconscious in a semi-naked condition on a roadside in Haripal area of Hooghly district.

As per the report, the incident occurred on Friday night when the 15-year-old girl was on her way home after attending tuition classes. She was allegedly forced into a car by a group of men who sexually assaulted her before dumping her on the road in an unconscious condition with her clothes ripped. Police said the girl has been admitted to a hospital where she underwent medical examination, presumably to determine whether she was raped.

In a social media post, the West Bengal Police said there are no suspects in the case so far and warned of stern action against those spreading rumors about the incident. “In reference to an alleged sexual assault of a minor girl at Haripal yesterday evening. Investigation till now, including the medico legal opinion, has revealed that there are no suspects at this stage.

Request to respect the privacy of the girl child and her family. Stern legal action will be initiated against those spreading rumours. Investigation proceeds,” the police said.

BJP alleges ‘cover-up’ Meanwhile, the BJP has cornered Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the incident, alleging that her “police” to cover up the case by the not allowing the media to enter the hospital where the girl is admitted. In an X post, BJP T Cell head Amit Malviya said, “Mamata Banerjee’s police have cordoned off the hospital, the media isn’t being given access and local TMC leaders are swirling around, to ensure the incident doesn’t get reported”. Malviya claimed that West Bengal was the “most unsafe place” for women and demanded Banerjee’s resignation.

“Mamata Banerjee has failed. She must step down, immediately. Enough is enough.

She hasn’t even set up fast-track courts to handle rape and POCSO cases,” he wrote. Kolkata doctor rape and murder The Hooghly case comes nearly a month after the brutal rape and killing of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital which has triggered mass outrage and widespread protests across the country. The medic’s body was found in a bloodied state in the hospital’s seminar room on the morning of August 9, leading to the arrest of the accused, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, who was an outsider frequenting the hospital premises.

The ghastly nature of the crime sparked protests nationwide protests from medics across the country, which has brought medical services to a grinding halt for days as hundreds of doctors went on strike under different banners demanding safety of medics through a central law. On August 13, the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the probe from the Kolkata Police to the CBI, which started its investigation on August 14.
