Only Fools and Horses is arguably one of the greatest British comedies to grace the airwaves. Loyal fans know and love the central characters in the show including dodgy dealer Del Boy (played by David Jason), his younger brother Rodney (Nicholas Lyndhurst) and their lodger relative Uncle Albert (Buster Merryfield). Over the years, the BBC sitcom brought some of the most memorable comedic moments to our screens.
So you can understand why several stars of the stage and screens fought to make a cameo appearance on the beloved show. This included the likes of David Beckham, Richard Branson, Jonathan Ross, and Aled Jones. But arguably one of the most unlikely cameos during its 22-year stint was Bee Gees’ singer Barry Gibb.
His appearance came at a time when the group’s music career was on a high after they soared to the top of the charts with their hit single You Win Again. It’s no secret that the Manchester native was quite the prankster, after he became known for regularly cracking jokes and keeping interviewers in stitches when promoting their music. Ultimately, convincing Barry to appear in the show was fairly easy given that he was a huge fan of Only Fools and Horses himself according to Sir David Jason.
Speaking to The Sun about what it was like filming with the hit maker, Jason revealed that the musician “was A) admirably down to earth and B) just the most enormous fan of our show.” He continued: “As an ex-pat, Barry apparently used to insist on having two things flown out to him from the UK that he couldn’t get in the States. Jaffa Cakes and tapes of Only Fools and Horses.
Ah, that rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle.” Barry appeared in the second half of the two-part Christmas Special titled Miami Twice: Oh To Be In England. Whilst Del Boy and Rodney are taking a boat tour of local tourist hot spots, the pass Barry Gibb’s Miami home where he could be seen on his lawn.
Del Boy shouts: “Rodders, look! There’s a real-life Bee Gee!” Unconvinced Barry was really watering his lawn, Rodney shouts back that it’s probably the gardener he’s shouting at. Typical to the character’s loudmouth nature, Del Boy then proceeds to shout across the water: “Alright Bazza!” before giving a terrible rendition of one of their most celebrated songs How Deep Is Your Love? The pair can only see the back of a man’s head who is sporting the singer’s signature locks as continue to bicker over the identity of the man watering his plants on the lawn. But moments later Barry finally turns round to the camera whilst throwing down his hose pipe and dusting off his hands as he mumbles: “Like I need all this” before walking away.
Despite his brief cameo, fans up and down celebrated his small cameo at the time..
