Members of the Bougainville Copper Limited (BCL) engagement team traveled to Pokpok Island, off the coast of Arawa, earlier this month to bolster the island’s rural healthcare services. The company provided essential medical supplies, including drugs and medicines, to the local Aid Post, which serves a wide catchment area encompassing Wisai, Kieta, Panguna, and Wakunai. The BCL team, comprised of Alphonse Tapit, Lohial Nuau, and local chief Peter Garuai, presented the supplies to the Pokpok community.

The event was also attended by key local figures, including Mary Gula, Deputy Chairwoman of Metora Ward; Severius Kami, Chairman of the Aid Post Committee; Timothy Tavai, Aid Post Officer in Charge; and other community members. Severius Kami expressed profound gratitude for BCL’s support, emphasizing the critical role of the donation. “The impact of this funding cannot be overstated.

Improved healthcare services will reduce the burden of illness, save lives and contribute to the overall wellbeing and productivity of our community,” Kami stated. Lohial Nuau, speaking on behalf of BCL, highlighted the company’s commitment to supporting vital community infrastructure. “BCL was pleased to be able to make a meaningful contribution to what is a vital community facility, that is relied upon by many,” Nuau said.

The provision of medical supplies aims to ensure the continued operation of the Pokpok Aid Post and improve healthcare access for the island’s residents and those from surrounding areas..
