In what comes as a big relief for India ahead of the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against Australia in Perth, KL Rahul has been declared fit by the BCCI medical team. Rahul suffered an elbow injury during the intra-squad match simulation at WACA in Perth. Rahul was dropped from the India squad in the New Zealand series, however, he was recalled for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

He'll be a key player for India in the five-match marquee series given his sheer quality and experience of playing in the country before. His injury left India sweating, especially with doubts over the availability of captain Rohit Sharma and the injury to Shubman Gill, however, the batter was declared fit as India breathed a sigh of relief. Physiotherapist Yogesh Parmar gave an update on Rahul’s injury and how the batter recovered in time before the epic series.

“I took him for the x-ray and scan and, based upon the reporting, I was a lot more confident that he should be fine. It was just a matter of controlling the pain and giving him some confidence,” Parmar said. “From a medical point of view, he is absolutely fine,” he added.

Rohit Sharma was blessed with a baby boy recently and he is yet to depart for Australia, making him almost certain to miss the first Test. India added Abhimanyu Easwaran to the BGT squad as a back-up opener, however, he did not show any promise, suffering failures in the two practice games against Australia A and the following Intra squad match.

If Rohit is not available, India will have to play both Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan in the XI. Jurel showed good form in the second practice game against Australia A and scored twin fifties. India have also reportedly asked Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devdutt Padikkal to stay back in Australia as back-up batters.
