First it was their offensive guru, then an assistant general manager, now an assistant coach. The off-season plundering of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers front office continued with the B.C.
Lions unveiling their new coaching staff on Thursday. Joining new Lions head coach Buck Pierce is long-time Bombers assistant Kevin Bourgoin, who split the last eight seasons in charge of Winnipeg’s running backs and receivers. With Bourgoin’s help, the Bombers boasted the CFL rushing leader, Andrew Harris, for three straight years.
As receivers coach the last four seasons, Bourgoin oversaw Dalton Schoen’s spectacular, league-leading rookie season in addition to 1,000-yard years by Kenny Lawler and Nic Demski. He joins Pierce, formerly the Bombers’ offensive coordinator, in B.C.
, while assistant GM Ted Goveia took the GM job in Hamilton. There’s been no word out of Winnipeg on a replacement for either. The Bombers have also been quiet in the re-signing of players recently, offensive lineman Stanley Bryant, linebacker Tony Jones and kicker Sergio Castillo the only players re-upping so far.
Schoen and Lawler are among those set to become free agents next month. The Bombers will try to reach a sixth straight Grey Cup, with Winnipeg hosting the game this year. paul.
