BBC Tribe fans fear host Bruce Parry has hit 'rock bottom' following brutal ritual scenes

Devastated viewers of Tribe with Bruce Parry watched in horror as the BBC presenter took part in a brutal tribe ritual - and that was just the beginning.

After more than a decade away from the small screen, presenter Bruce Parry travelled deep into an Angolian desert for the first instalment of his new BBC series Tribe with Bruce Parry. The debut episode saw the broadcaster travel for two days to reach a remote Mucubal tribe in Angola, central Africa. It's fair to say viewers were taken aback as the 56-year-old TV star engrossed himself into the tribe rituals and explored their unique culture.

On Sunday night (April 6) fans tuned in for the debut episode of the new series which saw him get "covered in s***" as he resurfaced the floor of a hut with cow dung, before washing his hands with the dung in place of soap. But that wasn't all. He watched a young boy yell out in intense pain as he was circumcised by a village elder, with even a local anaesthetic failing to stop his distress.

Yet that was nothing compared to the bloodcurdling screams of a goat Bruce brutally suffocated to death with his bare hands as part of a sacrificial ritual. Tribe members held the animal's legs as it writhed around in desperate agony, and Bruce held his hands over its nose and mouth until its last breath. The horror continued throughout the show as a girl had several of her teeth knocked out as a badge of beauty, while Bruce opted to have his "sharpened".

As the traumatising scenes hit the airwaves, horrified viewers took to X - formerly known as Twitter - to share their distress over the "brutal" scenes online. One grimaced: "Can't watch!" as another chimed in: "I've just spent the last 5 minutes wincing #tribe." "Jeeeesus, this ep of #TribeWithBruceParry has been brutal in so many ways," a third exclaimed, while a fourth lamented: "Ah Bruce, you're hitting rock bottom!" Unsurprisingly, some viewers who witnessed Bruce sprawled out on his back having his teeth sharpened with a formidable-looking blade were squeamish.

One branded the practise "grim and backward", while another added a touch of dark humour to the occasion, writing: "Watching the Bruce Parry fella on #Tribe has made me cancel next week's dental appointment!" It takes incredible strength to survive in the village, with the nearest doctor being an eight-hour trek away - but an astonished Bruce learnt that the tribe members can often walk up to 50 miles a day.
