Last night, fans finally received their long-awaited conclusion to the much-loved BBC sitcom , which has delivered 14 years of memorable characters and side-splitting scenes. The ultimate episode disclosed that Smithy, played by James Corden, did not accept Nessa's proposal from the 2019 Christmas special, portrayed by Ruth Jones, and was instead poised to wed his partner Sonia, brought to life by Laura Aikman. Despite the emotional rollercoaster, viewers were thrilled to see a happy resolution for Nessa and Smithy in the 90-minute finale.

Creators Ruth and James endeavoured to reunite the entire ensemble, including Russell Tovey as Budgie and Sheridan Smith as Rudi. Nonetheless, Gwynfor Roberts, who appeared as Dick Powell in two episodes and was frequently referenced throughout the series, was absent from the final script of the Christmas episode. Initially included in the draft, writers Ruth Jones and James Corden found they couldn't fit him into the final version.

At an early screening, Ruth shared: "I think in the original script we had Dick Powell. There just wasn't room for him, God bless him." Join the Daily Record's WhatsApp community here and get the latest news sent straight to your messages.

She expressed how 'lovely' it was to have the rest of the group back, reports the Mirror . Audiences were taken aback when the final episode opened with a wedding, but it wasn't the anticipated union of Smithy and Nessa. Instead, viewers saw Smithy on the verge of marrying his pretentious girlfriend Sonia, portrayed by Laura Aikman, who had secretly joined the set to maintain the element of surprise.

The plot twist unfolded as Smithy's mate Gavin, played by Mathew Horne, intervened to halt the wedding in the nick of time, leading to Smithy abandoning Sonia at the altar to prevent Nessa from leaving on a ship, setting the stage for their own nuptials. At a screening event for the cast and crew, Ruth expressed her emotions: "I'm feeling a bit drained. It was so lovely to watch it with an audience. I hope we did you proud.

It was just lovely to hear all the reactions. To hear that very initial response, it's just gorgeous." An emotional James reflected: "I just wanted it to feel satisfying really.

What was really interesting is after the 2019 special, all people would say to us was, what does he say? They would never say who did he choose. "I called Ruth and I was like, I wonder if we could trick everybody into thinking that for the first six or seven minutes that they're just going to watch a wedding between Nessa and Smithy. I remember so vividly having that chat with Ruth going, 'oh, I wonder if we could pull that off.

I feel like we did'." Get the latest celebrity gossip and telly news sent straight to your inbox. Sign up to our daily Showbiz newsletter here .
