The BBC Christmas Day viewing figures are out – and some might come as a surprise to fans. The broadcaster served up a very festive plate of offerings on the big day, including the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey , which drew the Welsh sitcom to a close. Also airing was the new Wallace and Gromit feature film, Vengeance Most Fowl, the Christmas Doctor Who special and a one-off Strictly Come Dancing episode.
But some fans were left unimpressed by the viewing figures, despite the BBC pulling in a much bigger audience than in recent years. Pointless star Richard Osman confirmed on X: “12.5m for Gavin and Stacey last night.
Will go higher still with catch-up. Wallace and Gromit peaked over 10m too.” Those figures weren’t entirely accurate, as the BBC released the actual numbers.
According to the broadcaster, Gavin and Stacey was the most watched show of the day with 12.32million viewers, followed by Wallace and Gromit at 9.38million.
The King’s speech raked in 5.98million viewers on the BBC alone, while the Call the Midwife Christmas special got 4.42million viewers tuning in.
EastEnders got 4.39million viewers, while Doctor Who lagged behind slightly at 4.11million, and the Strictly Christmas special only got 4.

Fans have been left fretting despite the incredible results, with one writing on X: “Amazing viewing figures, but it feels like yesterday was the BBC 's final Christmas hurrah. I can't think of any programme the Beeb has in its stable that would approach that G&S figure in the future.
” Someone else said: “I find it crazy that barely 15% of the population was watching Wallace and Gromit. It was 6:30pm on Christmas Day .” And another chimed in: “The BBC still very much has it when it wants to have it.
Would expect decent numbers for Outnumbered tonight as well.” While a fourth fan tweeted: “Just shows what people really want to see..
