BBC 's Antiques Road Trip was halted as antiques expert Mark Stacey found himself locked in a malfunctioning old lift in an awkward moment on air. While competing with Christina Trevanion, Mark's search for valuable antiques took a surprising turn at Macclesfield's historic Paradise Mill, which was established in 1862. In an episode which aired in 2017, Mark entered the mill's original 1930s elevator with sights set on the higher levels, only for the lift to cease working mid-journey, prompting frantic cries for assistance.
Tour guide Derek had initially reassured a concerned Mark about the vintage lift's operation, yet as it ground to a halt, Mark panicked as he asked: "How old is the lift?" and Derek's reply, "1930s," became worryingly prophetic. Mark responded: "Don't tell me it breaks down!" only for his nightmare to come true in a terrifying moment. Trapped in the elevator, Mark pleaded with the guide, as he begged: "Derek, please tell me you're joking?" However, Derek told him that was a major first airing on the BBC show, as he said: "I'm afraid it's the first time it's ever happened.
" Museum boss Sue echoed Derek by stating: "No, it's the first time it's ever happened." As anxiety mounted, Derek prompted the alarm, which led to a bemused Mark exclaiming: "I can't believe it! We're stuck in a lift! Was that an alarm or an air raid warning?". Narrator Tim Wonnacott lightheartedly remarked: "Crumbs.
This is a bit of a pickle! Gosh, stuck in a lift with Mark Stacey. While they await rescue, let's zip back to Buxton. Don't worry dear viewers, they eventually managed to escape.
" Much to the audience's relief, the scenes thereafter showed Mark stepping out of the lift and jestingly proclaiming: "I'm a hero really." Mark used to be a social worker before he started his work as an antiques dealer, and he has carved out a niche for himself among BBC watchers, frequently gracing screens on esteemed antique shows like Bargain Hunt, Flog It!, and Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is. Antiques Road Trips on BBC One, whilst enthusiasts can watch earlier episodes on BBC iPlayer.
