The Labour Party (LP) in Bayelsa State has suffered a major setback as its governorship candidate in the last election, Udengs Eradiri, and his running mate, Commodore Benjamin Nathus (retd), announced their resignations from the party. Their departure was accompanied by a mass exodus of key party stakeholders, including most of the Labour Party’s local government chairpersons in the state. Eradiri, who was recently conferred a Fellowship by the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), formalized his exit in a resignation letter addressed to the state chairman of the Labour Party in Yenagoa.

The letter, dated December 8 and titled “Letter of Withdrawal as Labour Party Member”, cited his desire to pursue his political aspirations on a platform better equipped to deliver the leadership Bayelsa State deserves. “I appreciate the members of the party who believed in my vision for a better Bayelsa and supported my candidacy. Unfortunately, we couldn’t scale through the intrigues and challenges implanted in the party leadership,” Eradiri stated in the letter.

Reflecting on his journey with the Labour Party, Eradiri expressed gratitude for the political camaraderie and for the opportunity to traverse Bayelsa in pursuit of transformative leadership. In a separate resignation letter, Commodore Nathus echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing his search for a platform committed to a brighter and more prosperous Bayelsa. “I am profoundly grateful for the support and camaraderie of party members who shared in our vision for a thriving Bayelsa and graciously provided me the opportunity to serve as a deputy governorship candidate,” Nathus wrote.

He acknowledged the invaluable experiences gained during his campaign, adding, “The journey has been enriched with insights and the honor of working with dedicated colleagues while engaging deeply with communities.” Eradiri, who finished third in the Bayelsa governorship election, confirmed his resignation in an interview, explaining that he is currently engaged in consultations with stakeholders to decide his next political move. “We are consulting seriously and engaging all stakeholders to determine the next political party to join.

Our next platform of interest will be one that enables us to provide meaningful service to the people and move Bayelsa forward,” he said.
