Bayelsa State got a big win this week as the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) officially opened its new Accounting Research Centre at the University of Africa, Toru-Orua, a move widely seen as a major investment in education and professional development.Speaking on Tuesday at the launch of ANAN’s 2025 Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MCPD) programme in Yenagoa, Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo praised the association for its long-standing commitment to training and upskilling accountants across the country.Ewhrudjakpo called the newly commissioned research centre a “massive contribution” not just to the university, but to the growth of the accounting profession nationwide.
Ewhrudjakpo urged participants to fully engage with the two-day training, stressing that professions like accounting demand constant learning to stay ahead in today’s fast-changing financial landscape. He also reiterated the state government’s readiness to support ANAN’s ongoing projects in the state, especially the planned College of Accountancy in Sampou, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area. The Deputy Governor had special praise for Dr James Neminebor, the outgoing national president of ANAN and a native of Bayelsa, thanking him for representing the state with distinction over the past two years.
He said,“Let me on behalf of the governor, the government and people of our state thank the leadership and members of ANAN for locating its Accounting Research Centre in Bayelsa.“I understand that project was commissioned yesterday at the University of Africa, Toru-Orua. As a government, we consider that kind gesture as a massive contribution to the development of the University and to the accounting profession in not only the state but the entire country.
“Let me also use this opportunity to also commend ANAN for your education policy that has become an effective system of training and capacity building that has brought about the emergence of countless chartered accountants in Nigeria.“Clearly, what you are doing is contributing greatly to the development of accounting, and I want to say that it deserves emulation by other public institutions in the country.”In his keynote address, Dr Neminebor explained that the MCPD programme was designed to keep members informed about new developments in the field, while thanking the Bayelsa State Government for its steady support during his time in office.
Also speaking at the event, the state chairman of ANAN, Prince Tenbebelakumo Amgbare, said it was a privilege for Bayelsa to host this year’s MCPD, adding that the choice reflects the association’s confidence in the state’s potential. The event, held at the Gabriel Okara Cultural Centre, also saw the induction of new members into the association. The post Bayelsa gets academic boost as ANAN opens accounting research centre appeared first on Nigerian NewsDirect.
