D1: SAGINAW UNITED 49, BAY CITY CENTRAL 45 After a season of mostly forgettable outcomes, Bay City Central did its best to deliver one to remember. And while the Wolves bowed out with a tough 49-45 loss to Saginaw United in the Division 1 district opener, they may have done just that. Playing with a winning spunk, Central rallied from an 11-point deficit with four minutes left in the game, dramatically tying it up at 45-45 on a three-point play by senior Alivia Kukla with 43 seconds on the clock.
But the Wolves would not score again and United iced it with four free throws in the closing seconds. “We did play our best game of the year on our last game,” Central coach Todd Thunberg said. “It wasn’t the win we were looking for, but we know that we played hard and had our chance of winning.
And we gave it our best shot.” Central (2-21) finished with its fewest wins since 2010 and, with the expanded schedule, became the first team in program history to lose 21 games in a season. But the Wolves went down fighting in the postseason opener at Flint Carman-Ainsworth.
Kukla rose to the moment with a 22-point, 16-rebound effort and fellow senior Tiareyona Holmes went for 19 points and 12 rebounds in a fitting farewell performance. Holmes hit five 3-pointers in the game as Central fought to the finish. United (9-12) was led by Brittney Johnson with 14 points, Maliyah Phillips 13 and Destiny Clark 11, advancing to the semifinal round to face Saginaw Heritage at 5:30 p.
