Battenfeld: Democrats in Congress at rock bottom even among own voters

Like Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey, they have big mouths but little support among the public, new polls have found, and it’s time to ask why.

Massachusetts Democrats living in their blue state bubble are at rock bottom even among their own voters as they unsuccessfully flail at opposing President Donald Trump at every turn.Like Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey, they have big mouths but little support among the public, new polls have found, and it’s time to ask why.Instead of going after Trump on every single issue, Democrats and their allies in the media should be focused on restoring their own credibility first and presenting a vision of how they want the country to run.

A new Quinnipiac University poll found just 22% of voters approve of the way Democrats in Congress are handling their job, an all-time low.A whopping 68% of all voters disapprove of Democrats – a bad sign as they look to regain their footing while Republicans control Congress, the courts and the executive branch.Even worse, only 40% of Democratic voters said they approve of how Democrats in Congress are doing their jobs, while 49% disapprove.

At the same time, a Gallup poll found that the approval rating of the Republican-led Congress has surged to 29%, the highest level in four years. That was driven largely by Republican voters who overwhelmingly back the party’s congressional agenda and Trump.Forty percent of all voters approve of the way Republicans are handling their jobs, while 52% disapprove, according to the Quinnipiac survey.

Trump’s approval rating is clicking down slightly to less than 50% – not great but certainly better positioned than Democrats. This comes as Democratic lawmakers, especially those from Massachusetts, attempt to block Trump on every issue ranging from federal budget cuts to foreign policy. They are completely out of touch with reality, cut off from what most voters in the rest of the country think.

But while they whine, Democrats have been incredibly ineffective at getting things done for their constituents and virtually silent at Hamas’s war atrocities. They have no leverage and no support in public opinion.Democrats mostly have failed to stop Trump’s executive orders and his Cabinet nominees.

They are instead establishing useless task forces to make strategies over how to deal with Trump in courts and in public opinion. In fact there is increasing dissatisfaction at how Democrats are dealing with Trump. Fewer than one in four Democratic voters believe their party is standing up to Trump the right amount.

Six in ten Democrats say Democrats in Congress are not doing enough to stand up to Trump, while the rest are split. In Massachusetts, the all-liberal delegation and state elected officials write daily press releases fighting Trump, which are repeated in the media in the liberal echo chamber..
