Ludhiana: Green crusader Balbir Singh Seechewal , who is also an MP, and revenue minister Hardeep Singh Mundia set the ball rolling for the construction of a bathing ghat along the Buddha Dariya in Bhukhari Khurd village Saturday. They said after decades, villagers will be able to take a dip in the Dariya on the auspicious occasion of Baisakhi, which falls on April 13. Seechewal measured the TDS of the water, which was about 127.
TDS or total dissolved solids is the amount of dissolved substances in water. It is measured in milligrams per litre (mg/L) or parts per million (ppm). Expressing confidence in Seechewal's determination to clean the Buddha Dariya, Mundia said, "The clean riverbanks will help revive village fairs.
" He appealed to the people of Punjab to come forward to save the natural resources of water. The first such ghat was built along the Dariya on Tajpur Road. It is part of the initiative to clean the Buddha Dariya and revive its former glory.
In Bhukhari Khurd, where four feet of dung was dumped into the Buddha Dariya, Seechewal ensured that it was removed in 40 days using excavators. "I prefer alternatives to criticism," he said, taking a subtle dig at his critics. The sarpanch of the village, Satpal Singh, and all the members of the panchayat extended an open invitation to all to come and celebrate Baisakhi along the Buddha Dariya.
Slamming the initiative, Seechewal's critics said bathing ghats cannot be a solution to the problem..
