Basildon police officer denies 'putting hands round teenage girl's throat' in alleged assault during arrest

It is alleged he struck the girl with his knee and put his hands around her throat

An Essex Police officer has denied assaulting a teenage girl during an arrest where he allegedly "put his hands around her throat". PC Thomas White was charged with causing actual bodily harm (ABH) in relation to an incident in March 2024. PC White was involved in a "challenging situation" during the arrest of a teenage girl, 14, in Basildon in March 2024.

Essex Police said a referral was made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) who carried out an investigation. The IOPC said the investigation was after an incident on March 27 when a child was arrested by PC White. During the arrest, the officer allegedly using PAVA spray on the child and then at hospital they allegedly used excessive force on the girl.



PC White appeared at Ipswich Magistrates' Court on Monday (October 21). It is alleged that the office struck the child with his knee and put his hands around their throat.

The IOPC previously said: "Our investigation began following a conduct referral from the force in April 2024. After concluding our investigation in August 2024, we sent a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service, who authorised the charge of ABH." An Essex Police spokesperson added: "An Essex Police officer is due to appear in court after being charged with assault.

PC Thomas White was involved in a challenging situation during the arrest of a teenage girl in Basildon in March 2024. "As a result of an incident which arose during that arrest, a referral was made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which opted to take on an independent investigation. PC White was subsequently charged with ABH.
