Actor and model Barbie Ferreira is reflecting on the criticism she received after booking a major modeling job as a teenager. The 28-year-old “Euphoria” star recently appeared on the and recalled working in the modeling industry from a young age. During the conversation with host Caleb Hearon, Ferreira spoke about the backlash she faced following her appearance in an Aerie campaign.

For her photoshoot with the clothing brand, Ferreira posed in a bikini. She shared one of the pictures from the campaign on back in January 2016. Speaking about the modeling gig and her start in the industry, Ferreira told Hearon in a clip shared on , “I’ve been on the internet, like as a model, since I was 16, and I was a bathing suit model.



My first big gig was, like, me in a string bikini for Aerie. Everyone was like, ‘What? This woman exists?’” She said the negative comments about her became “international news.” “It was hilarious,” she added.

Ferreira revealed that it was the first time she can remember that strangers were commenting on her body. She then joked that they would’ve preferred she wore “a garbage bag with holes in it” for the ad. “It really freaked me out,” she continued.

“I remember doing that shoot. I was, like, chain-smoking cigarettes and had my Supreme outfit on with my Air Forces. I was insane.

” Ferreira said at the time she didn’t think twice about agreeing to wear the bikini. The actor has repeatedly commented over the years about the importance of body positivity. In August 2022, she announced on her Instagram story that her “Euphoria” character, Kat, would .

“After four years of getting to embody the most special and enigmatic character kat, I’m having to say a very teary-eyed goodbye,” she said in a post. “I hope many of you could see yourself in her like i did and that she brought you joy to see her journey into the character she is today. I put all my care and love into her and i hope you guys could feel it.

Love you Katherine Hernandez.” Months later, she explained her departure while chatting with Dax Shepard on his podcast, voicing some of her frustrations with Kat’s storyline. “I don’t think there was a place for (Kat) to go,” she told Shepard.

“I think that there were places she could have gone. I just don’t think it would have fit into the show.” Ferreira continued, “I don’t know if it was going to do her justice, and I think both parties knew that.

I really wanted to be able to not be the fat best friend. I don’t want to play that, and I think they didn’t want that either.” Her character embraced her sexuality and body in Season 1, but she faded into the background in the sophomore season.
