Barack Obama has admitted he has a "deep deficit" with his wife, Michelle Obama , following his two consecutive terms in the White House . The former US president , 63, made the confession during a conversation with Hamilton College President Steven Tepper on Thursday. Barack said serving as president for eight years took a toll on their marriage as he confessed he has been working hard to do fun things with Michelle in a bid to make up for it.

He said: "I was in a deep deficit with my wife. So I have been trying to dig myself out of that hole by doing occasionally fun things." It is not the first time Barack opens up about the impact his presidency had on his relationship with Michelle .

During an interview on CBS Mornings in 2023, he confessed: "Let me just say this: It sure helps to be out of the White House and to have a little more time with her." The former first lady also shared her own struggles back in 2022, when she told Revolt TV: "There were 10 years where I couldn't stand my husband." At the time, Michelle said "marriage isn't 50/50 - ever, ever" as she explained, "There are times I'm 70, he's 30.

There are times he's 60, [I'm] 40. But guess what? Ten years - we've been married 30 - I would take 10 bad years over 30. It's just how you look at it.

" Then in April 2023, the attorney and author said she talks openly about her relationship with Barack "because marriage is hard, and a lot of young people quit on marriage over things that are just a part of the commitment." Speculation has surrounded the couple's marriage, with some believing there may be marital issues. However, the dynamic duo has dispelled such rumors through affectionate social media updates.

The couple met in the late 1980s at the law firm where they both worked and went on to tie the knot in 1992. They welcomed their first child, Malia, in 1998 and their second daughter Sasha in 2001. The two sisters grew up in the White House from 2009 to 2017 after the family moved to Washington DC when Barack was elected president.

At the time, during his campaign, Barack said he was "absolutely certain, because we've talked about it, that [Malia and Sasha] are not looking forward to moving" or about "the prospects of having to make new friends." He told People in 2008: "So I'm sure that there's a part of them that says we won't be heartbroken if things don't work out." But in 2011, Michelle said Malia and Sasha - who attended the private Sidwell Friends School through high school graduation - had "settled" as she added: "They're healthy, they're thriving.

They have a normal life." Three years after leaving the White House, Barack said of his daughters: "Now they're both old enough, where they just enjoy each other's company. To be together as a family and see how they've become these marvelous young women - there's been no greater joy than that.
